Match report versus Royal Elite Youth Blues U14’s League Cup
Round 2 of the League Cup saw us drawn against Royal Elite Youth Blues a team based around Reading and fielding a number of Aldershot District players. It was definitely going to be our toughest test so far and on a crisp sunny day the game started with the opposition settling the better and created a couple of half decent chances early on but the defence of Josh, Josh, Josh and Okey stood firm with Adam having to make a couple of routine saves. Our midfield then started to take control of the game with Scott and Callum bossing the opposition and Ryan and Ollie scaring the full backs with their pace. An early substitution saw Harry Small come on and with his first touch put in a lovely cross only for Joe M to head wide. The only real chance for us in the first half fell to Dan M who from a corner saw the ball loop into the air; he manoeuvred his body well to strike across the goal only for the GK to pull off a good save. Just before half time Royal Elite nearly took the lead when our defence failed to clear from a corner but the shot deflected up on to the cross bar and was cleared up field as it dropped to one of our defenders. Half time and 0-0.
The half time team talk consisted of being more direct, tracking back with the full backs and attempting to keep better possession. The second half started with us playing the game in their half more and more. James Dinsdale, a half time sub, found himself with lots of space moving down the right. He did what he should have done and kept running and running and hit a lovely shot from fully 30 yards which unfortunately was straight at the GK. Ollie then showed his pace when he skinned the right back and centre half and played a great ball to Joe Monk who hit it on the run past the GK and into the net to put us 1-0 to the good. Royal Elite knew they were in a game now and for 10 minutes piled on the pressure creating a number of chances. One chance produced a good save from Karl and lucky for Rutty it did as it was a deflected cross which he turned around the post.
Royal Elite then scored when a corner was whipped over and missed by everyone for their left back to run in at the far post and hit an unstoppable shot high into the net. This seems to rally our lads and after a good tackle from Matt C and a 1-2 with Tom B and Dan M, the cross landed at Ryan’s feet who calmly touched the ball past the GK into the net. 2-1 and with confidence Farnborough then scored again when Scott B won the ball back and passed to Dan M who beat a player and drilled the ball across the goal only for the GK to get his hands to the ball but not enough to stop it going into the net. With 5 minutes to go a great through ball put Ryan through who chipped the keeper expecting to be able to run onto the ball only to be brought down in the box. Unfortunately for Ryan, who normally puts penalties away easily, he missed scoring and brought a good save from the GK. In the final minute Josh O’Reilly controlled the ball on his chest with the ball bouncing up onto his shoulder. The referee deemed it to be hand ball and Royal Elite scored to bring the final score to 3-2 in favour of us.
The boys played fantastic in this game which was without doubt our toughest test so far. Let’s keep producing great performances like that and we will be a battle for any team. Well done fellas.
