Kingstonian Colts v Farnborough Elite Sun 6 Nov 2011 - League Cup Qtr Final

Kingstonian Colts v Farnborough Elite Sun 6 Nov 2011 - League Cup Qtr Final

The League Cup Quarter Final draw matched us against Kingstonian Colts, the team who were putting most pressure on us in the Surrey Premier League. This was going to be a good test and a good gauge for how we will fair against them in the league. An early morning trip to Kingston Upon Thames saw the lads arrived somewhat jaded but in good spirits for the game ahead. It looked like it was going to be a good test for our defence of James, Josh, Rutty and Okey with the front 2 of the "Colts" looking like fully fledge adults with a good physical presence. The game started end to end with Ryan getting the better of the left back on a couple of occasions and finding Joe and Ollie who couldn't get there shot on target but they were just finding their range. The game was a bit scrappy in the middle of the pitch with the pitch being fairly difficult to play on the boys adapted and started to play a little more direct with the Kingstonian defence pushing up and playing a flat back four. Tom B replaced Ryan who was suffering with an ankle knock. Tom B moved into the middle, with Joe pushing right and straight away Tom and Callum connected well with some good passing moves. Tom B went on one of his runs finding Ollie at the right time; his shot was low and hard and although the GK got his hand to it he wasn't able to keep it out to put us 1-0 to the good. The second goal came quickly afterwards when Matt C played the ball over the defence for the on running Joe Monk who brought a good save from the Colts GK. Unfortunately this save fell to Tom B who slotted the ball under the GK to give us a 2 goal lead.

Kingstonian were finding it difficult to live with our pace up front and although we at times played direct we played to our strengths and to their weaknesses. Tom B then doubled his tally when Scott B ran down the wing to get on to the end of a good pass from Callum. His first time cross was accurate as it landed at the feet of Ollie who shot and hit the post. The ball came out to Callum who drove it low only for it to deflect and land at the feet of Thomas who slotted it away to give us a 3-0 lead approaching half time. The last 5 minutes before the break Kingstonian forced a couple of corners from some good aerial pressure. One of the corners brought a great save from Karl when there big number 9 shot from a clearance and Karl flung himself to his left and turned it around the post. Half time and 3-0.

Half time changes saw Adam replace Karl, Josh E replace James D and Harry Small replace Okey. Harry S was straight away in the thick of things when he latched on to a through ball and crossed well for Ollie to shoot wide. Joe Monk then scored his first goal of the game when he was put through by a great ball from Callum and he finished well shooting low past the GK. Kingstonian were getting a bit more of the play in this half but our wide players of Ollie and Joe always gave us a good outlet to release the pressure. Joe M nearly scored again when Adam kicked a long kick out of his hands to Ollie who beat his defender, squared it to Joe who just couldn't get enough power behind his shot to beat the keeper. Kingstonian were now playing a higher line and pushing more guys forward but our defence was being stubborn and combining well to cancel out any chances. With the midfield 2 of Scott and Matthew making way for Okey and James and Ryan coming back on for Ollie we continued to battle and saw the game out with a good 4-0 win.

The other 3 Qtr Finals saw Epsom Eagles, Sandgate and Kew go through all from the Premier Elite league. Whoever we draw in the semi finals will be a good test for us but I'm sure as they did on Sunday the boys will always give there all. Although the game was a bit scrappy at times the lads battled well and had to play a bit more direct to get the result that we needed. Well done boys, let's keep marching on!!!!!
