Our first week of training twice meant that we could work on "finishing" on the Monday and "sliding and screening" on Friday. It is also helping us to build team spirit and develop players better.
Chris O'Reilly has kindly offered to coach the keepers more, and as an ex-keeper himself, I'm grateful for the coaching he's providing for Adam and Karl. I will also use the services of a professional goalkeeping coach from time-to-time if possible.
If training is the "lesson," then the match is the "examination." On a boiling hot day and a big pitch, the weather proved to be a bit of a leveller. If we focus on territory, possession, corners, shots etc, then we dominated. Being more clinical in front of goal and continuing to play patient, simple football are the two areas I'd look at. Finishing is an instinctive, "muscle memory" skill and the only thing I can ask is that forward players practice accuracy over and over again. The topics for training will focus on midfield and forward play in the coming weeks.
Overall, a brave performance though.
Next week, the focus is on training and a FA Youth Module 3 assessment for me (...yikes!!) It should be good preparation for the following week, when we play a good Prem Elite side in the cup. Some of you might remember some of their players from NEHYL, as they are ex-Aldershot and Hook. That will certainly be a test and a nice scalp if we can pull it off!
