Kingston Juniors v Farnborough Elite FC (under 14); Surrey Youth League Premier Division

Match Report for our game today:

Kingston Juniors v Farnborough Elite Kick Off 1000 hrs at Kingston - Surrey Premier League

After a couple of weeks of cup football it was time to once again concentrate on our league performances with an away trip to Kingston. Although Kingston are currently sitting at the bottom of the league it was a game we couldn't underestimate and we were going into the game as prepared as ever.

With Josh R and Scott B rested and put on the bench it gave Ed his chance to make his first start for the club.

The boys looked excellent with a short passing game in the warm-up but then found the game being delayed due to the fog which gave us a chance to practice corners - an opportunity that Paul couldn't resist.

The game started with both teams putting together some good passing moves and Kingston looked to be a very capable side. They did play a deep line of defence which was only going to help with our passing game and this proved the case when Joe M was put through early on, and skillfully rounded the keeper only to lose control of the ball and his stretched shot hit the side netting. Callum was holding the number 10 position well and had a great chance to score when the ball came out from a clearance and landed at his feet. He hit his shot with power and accuracy only for it to hit the post. Ollie who had obviously been listening in training, remembered to follow up to place the ball into the net and put us 1-0 to the good.

1-0 soon became 2-0 when Ryan got on the end of a Josh O'Reilly free kick to slot it home with a tidy finish. Kingston didn't stop trying to play good football, but at times did this in the wrong areas and this led to our third goal. Putting them under pressure in their own half Ryan and Joe forced the GK into a bad clearance and Matt C hit the ball back into the goal first time with his left foot from an angled position at the edge of the box. A well taken goal.

Almost immediately Ollie scored our fourth of the game and his second when he went on a great solo run and just when you thought the GK was going to get it he nicked it around run and placed the ball into an empty net. 25 minutes gone and 4-0 to the good.

Scott B then replaced Ollie which changed the formation slightly with Callum pushing forward on the left and Ed playing in the number 10 position. With the game being played in our opponents half this enabled our full backs of James and Harry to push forward and create space in the wider part of the pitch. Joe Monk then made up for his earlier miss when Scott and Ed played a great 1-2, Scott then played a great through ball for Joe M to run onto and finish with good composure to give us a 5 goal lead as the half time whistle blew.

The 2 changes at half time saw Rutty replace Josh O'Reilly and Adam replace Karl in goal. Paul asked the players to try things in the second half, as experimenting is good for their developement. Kingston almost straight away in the second half scored a good goal when our defence was caught slightly out of position and although Okey did well to make up the ground his well timed tackle fell at the feet of the Kingston winger who shot across Adam into the far corner. This seemed to rock us slightly and another defensive error saw Kingston score again to put the score 5-2 and we needed to settle to hold the advantage. We then started to get on top again and dominate the space to put some good passing moves together and on another day would have scored a couple more goals during this good 10 minutes spell of good possession.

Callum then refocused his shooting boot when he picked the ball up about 30 yards out, ran and few yards and hit a great shot into the far corner giving the GK no chance. Ollie in search of his hat trick then came back on for Joe M and the injured Okey was replaced by Josh O'Reilly. Our ability to maintain possession was grinding down the energy levels of the Kingston side and Harry S capatalised on this with a good run down the left only to cut into the box and be brought down. Deservingly Harry stepped up and slotted the penalty home to score his second goal in 2 games. Good lad Smalley!

The final chance of the game fell to Ryan who from about 3 yards out with an open goal blazed it over the bar (sorry Ryan I couldn't resist). A great team performance keeps us top of the league with a 100% record. The boys are looking sharp and are executing the skills and techniques we are trying in training well in our matches. Next week will of course be a different scenario but if we can keep performing at this high standard Paul and I believe we can win next week. It will take a lot of hard work but we can do it!!
