The rescheduled cup game against Abbey Rangers gave us our last game of the 2011 season and with Bisley's pitch in a fairly bad state, we reversed the fixture and played away.
In order to develop our players, we decided to play players in different positions. On a frosty cold morning the game started with good possession for Farnborough and we created a couple of good early chances.
It wasn't long before we went 1-0 to the good when Joe M was fouled on the left wing. Scott Butcher played a great ball into the box from the free kick and with a number of our players lining up to stick it away; an Abbey Rangers defender stuck a leg out and unfortunately put it into his own net. It's actually quite funny when this happens as everybody looks at me to try and claim the goal but sorry fellas a definite own goal.
Scott and Joe M seemed to be involved in some good moves early on and these 2 combined for our second goal when Joe used his pace to beat the full back only to pull it back to Scott to finish well and put us 2 up inside 15 minutes. Callum and Tom combined well at the back and were switching the ball well when Tom B switched a good pass to our full back Ryan who played a great ball down the line to Ollie. Ollie beat his defender and crossed a great ball which Josh O'Reilly finished from close range to give us a 3 goal cushion.
This 3 goal cushion suddenly became 4 when Callum carried the ball out of defence and played Ollie through. He calmly slotted the ball past the GK and into the net. Karl and Okey were then put on up front with the players trying to set them up when Rutty found himself in the box alone. He could have turned and shot but instead set Karl up who shot well and smashed the ball off the cross bar and over.
Rutty then found himself in the box again but this time played a great little ball back to Scott Butcher who drilled home the team's fifth goal and his second. Just as half time was upon us Matt Cook got on to a great reverse ball from Josh O'Reilly to finish well with the half time score being 6-0.
The half time team talk was based around keeping possesion and trying to switch play at every opportunity making the pitch nice and big. Karl went in goal for the second half.
A number of players changed positions again with Abbey Rangers playing a steadier second half and although we had lots of chances we didn't score as many second half goals. We did however see Joe M score a good goal when Okey took a throw in and with a great little touch by James D; Joe carried the ball and hit it on the half volley accross the GK for a great finish from right back. Harry S then finished the rout with a good header at the far post after a short corner between Ryan and Rutty saw Ryan float a great cross over.
So all in all a good performance and although played against a weaker opposition a few players gave Paul and I a look at them in different positions with different responsibilities which is only good for their development. Well done fellas!!
