8th January 2012: Sutton Utd 1 - 4 Farnborough Elite FC under 14s; WSYL Prem division

Our first game of the New Year saw us matched against our top of the league rivals Sutton Utd.

Sutton had played well since we beat them on the first day of the season and had won 10 straight games in a row in the league, so this was going to prove a good test for us. Our first match in the white away strip saw us start well and have the better of the early chances with Ollie and Tom B going close but the positioning of the Sutton goalkeeper made the saves look easier than they were.

The defence of Josh, Josh, Josh and Okey looked solid and with Matt and Scott holding the middle and Ed supporting the quick front 3 of Joe, Ollie and Tom B the shape was looking good with the team putting some good passing moves together. The emphasis prior to the game had been to get shots on target which the boys were doing very well, but the Sutton goalkeeper was up to all we could throw at them for about the first 25 minutes.

This was until Okey put a great tackle in winning the ball just inside the opposition's half. With a great diagonal ball aiming for Joe Monk's run in off the wing, Joe controlled the ball at the same time took it around the GK for a smooth finish to put us 1 - 0 to the good just before half time.

With no further chances the score stayed the same at the break. At half time Harry S, James, Adam, Callum and Ryan were brought into the game and they all settled really well as the second half started. The emphasis for the second half was to keep playing through the thirds but to be a bit more clinical in front of goal. Tom B started the second half as he finished the first and was doing a great job linking the midfield and attack. Farnborough then went 2-0 when Josh O'Reilly took a long throw which landed at the feet of Tom B who turned and shot early putting the ball past the Sutton GK at the front post. The link play down both flanks was looking good with Harry S and James providing good runs to assist Ryan and Ollie's wide play. Ryan had the beating of Sutton's left back and put over a couple of great crosses over only for the Sutton defence to clear.

Scott B then got on the score sheet when he picked the ball up on the right about 30 yards out, on looking up he saw the Sutton GK off his line and floated a great shot over him into the far corner of the goal.

Sutton then pulled a goal back when our defence lost a bit of shape allowing the Sutton centre forward to get in behind and slot his shot past Adam who had no chance. Some great passing and link play from Tom B gave Ryan the chance to score with a well taken goal looping the ball over the keeper into the far corner to give us a good 4-1 win.

Today was a good performance with the boys taking the tactics and techniques we have tried in training and executing them well in a game environment. It also makes the league table look better and without doubt was our best performance since our match against Royals Elite FC.
