Farnborough FC Elite - First match of the season

With a new club, new team and new league, the start of the new campaign for Farnborough FC Elite under 14s was always going to be interesting. Our first match in Surrey Youth League PREM was against Farnborough FC's Blue Square rivals Sutton Utd, so we expected a hard game. In the end, the score line (7-1) suggests the exact opposite, but nevertheless a good start for the players and you can only beat the teams put in front of you. Kenny will send out a full match report, but I was particularly pleased with our defending in the first half and forward play. The third goal took the ball from end-to-end at blistering speed and from the regain in possession was completed in 8 touches. Excellent.

This will be a long season, so there are plenty of challenges ahead in the league, the League Cup (just Prem and Elite Prem teams in that competition) and of course, the big one: the Surrey County Cup. We have a decent squad and we will need it, with every single player playing a big part over the course of the season. It will be a real test of our commitment, courage and team spirit.

Training has been limited by holidays and availability at Bisley, but thanks to some hard work by parents over the weekend the cable was a laid for the floodlights and I am hopeful the rest of the work will be completed shortly. A very big "thank you" to all of those who pitched in and helped. I have sent out a call for the rest of the club to pitch in to finish the job.

I will work through both attacking and defending topics over the coming weeks, combining advanced technical practices, squad practices, functions and phases of play. This will help me too, as I work towards the new version of the UEFA B License (...I did the old version a while ago, and the upgraded course is very good. FA Learning have got this right in my opinion).

So all in all, a satisfactory start.

Thanks to some great support from parents this weekend and I look forward to training on Friday and Carshalton (away) on Sunday.

All the best,

Paul Cook
Head Coach
Farnborough FC Elite - under 14s
