After a successful pre-season 11 a side tournament at Sandhurst the week earlier, the newly formed Farnborough U14’s kicked off the new season with a home match in the league against Sutton Utd. This was of course new territory for the team; with a match in the Surrey Premier League against unknown opposition. After a good team chat and warm up the boys settled really well with the first five minutes of the game being just that, a settling in period. Ryan M was having some joy down the wing and he set up the first goal when he beat the left back and drilled the ball across the box for Ollie to run in at the far side of the box and shoot across the keeper to put Farnborough 1 up.
After 12 minutes Ollie made it 2 when Joe M battled well to win the ball back and set Ollie it who kept his shot low to grab his second of the game. This 2nd goal definitely settled the team and although Sutton were playing some tidy football Matt C working hard in the middle with Scott and Dan seemed to thwart their advances and enable us to play our football going forward. Joe M was getting in some good positions and working really hard and this hard work and patience brought him a well taken goal when Ryan and Dan connected well and Ryan put over a great cross which Joe met full on with a good header to put us 3-0 up.
Ollie then completed his first half hat trick (not bad for his first league game for the team), when Josh Rutt took a free kick which was headed on by Tom B. With the Sutton keeper coming out Ollie managed to nip in front of him and head the ball over his hands and into the net. 30 minutes gone and 4 nil up, we probably couldn’t of asked for a better start. The goal that put up 5-0 was by far the goal of the game. It started when Adam punched the ball clear from a corner. With passes from Matt C, Ollie, Joe, Ryan and Scott the ball eventually fell to Dan who lofted the ball up and over the keeper to score off the post. Apparently he meant to do that. Half time and winning 5-0.
The second half kicking up the slight incline and playing against the wind was always going to be a bit more difficult. Ryan M grabbed himself a well earned goal when he was pulled down in the box only for him to step up and slot the penalty home to make it 6-0. The game was back and forward but with the Farnborough defence holding strong, the midfield linking well and the attack looking frightening Sutton were going to struggle to break us down. James Dinsdale went on a good run down the right and with a 1-2 with Dan set up Tom B to open his account for the season and put us 7-0 to the good. A late consolation goal for Sutton after an error at the back left the final score 7-1 and a great start to the season. Well done team.
